Auckland Orientation: Layout and Directions

Surrounded by a number of large rocky hills, the eastern side of Auckland is home to a bustling waterfront area, around the Queen Elizabeth II Square. From this part of the city, Auckland's main thoroughfare of Queen Street runs in a southerly district and leads to Auckland Town Hall and Karangahape Road.

Auckland city centre stands between both the waterfront district and Karangahape Road, being home to a selection of shops, restaurants and accommodation. On the northwestern side of central Auckland, the Ponsonby district is a particularly trendy part of the city, together with nearby Parnell.
